How Finding and Organizing Handles .nfo files.

I hope this is the right place to post this. I assume this is a bug. I found when I use Finding and Organizing, it will find ether the .nfo or the .avi file to move and rename but wont find both the .nfo and the .avi just one or the other and then only renames and moves one or the other. It should be noted that I added the .nfo file extension in the preferences. Now if I manually move the file, be it .nfo or .avi to the correct folder and then use the rename tab it will identify and rename the file properly. So it seems to only be an issue in Finding and Organizing. Also FYI the .nfo files have the same name as the .avi 's.

If you need any more information or clarification please let me know.

Thanks

Hi...

You definitely don't want "nfo" in the list of extensions, as that's what is making it randomly sometimes pick the nfo file. That list of extensions are just 'movie' file extensions.

Try turning on the option called something like "move/copy files with same base name" in the preferences (I forget what it is exactly called). That means that if it moves/copies/renames something called "Blahblah.avi" it'll do the same to "Blahblah.nfo", etc. That option is the one you want, to keep "related" files together, based on them having the same name, and only different extensions. This will also grab things like subtitles files, etc.

See how that goes. If it's still misbehaving, post back here and I'll look into it further.

I removed .nfo from the list of extensions. I was just about to say that it now doesn't pick up all the .nfo files but I just double checked and it looks like the option to "move/copy files with same base name" is case sensitive. I didn't realize that. So it looks like everything is working the way it was meant to. Would it be possible to make the option not case sensitive? I can't see a reason it would need to be case sensitive.

Thanks for the help

Its not supposed to be case sensitive. I've done a quick test here and it seems to be ok. Can you copy+paste from explorer the .avi filename, and corresponding .nfo file that is being missed? I'll try it with the exact same filenames here and see how it goes.

I could be missing something.... I have already processed most of my files, but I did take a screenshot before I did the rename/move of some of them.

Not as hi res as I thought, can probably get you a better image tonight when I'm home.

Ah.. I see whats going on! It's case insensitive in picking up the file, but then the name it offers to rename it to isn't the "new" name. I've found the problem in the code, so it'll be fixed in the next version I upload.

Give the latest alpha a go. The bug should be fixed.

I think its picking up and renaming the .nfo files like its supposed to now. But it misses some .nfo's. Now I think this is because the .nfo file that it misses is named differently then the .avi its supposed to be matched with. So this isn't a fault of your program. But I’ll explain how I deal with it and maybe you can make an adjustment. I don't notice that it misses the .nfo until I go look into the folders that are supposed to be empty, then I find it. So I don’t think its picking the .nfo up in Finding and Organizing. Which I don’t think its programmed to do so. What I do when I find the .nfo file is then copy it to the correct season folder for that show. Then I go and add .nfo to the file extensions ( I know you told me not to  ) I then go to the renaming tab do a check and it find the not properly named .nfo files. I hit rename and it renames them as it supposed to. Then I go back and remove .nfo from the file extensions so it won't mess the video files up when I’m doing the Finding and Organizing.

So I guess what I’m trying to get at is can .nfo files be treated the same as a video file but not count as a video. This might be helpful with people that use sub's also, I don’t use them so I’m not sure.

I'm thinking I could do an "other extensions" list. Files with these extensions would be renamed if they were in the show folders, but not count as a show being there if its associated .avi was missing. The defaults for this list could be nfo, txt, sub, srt, etc.

The next step would be to pick up matching nfo files based on the season and episode number found in it, and not force it to have exactly the same name as the .avi. e.g. "Show - S03E04.nfo" would match "Show - 3x04.avi".

I've put this on my list, so it'll get done one day. :) If it doesn't end up being too hard, it'll be relatively soon.

Grab the latest alpha (2.1.1a5). In the preferences, on the "files and folders" tab you can define a list of additional extensions. Files with those extensions will be renamed, etc., if they are in the show's folder. Let me know if there are any other common extensions I should add to the default list of nfo, srt, sub, and txt.
