101 thoughts on renaming

I keep thinking of things that would help this program so I till put them here. some of this is random thoughts and ranting or praiseing

Tvrename seems to be most useful for putting files away in the various drives folders.
there are various renaming programs around none are perfect i have tried. Tvrename does a pretty good job but it needs a couple things.
if it ran into a show like
aaa-house.1039.er.24.2010.v.avi it would be a wild guess what it might rename it to. it needs to have a way to set a allowable year range like 2009-2011 to look for years any number that is 4 digits and starts in 2 it flags as questionable.
if the first word is not a first word of any show / check till find word that is same as first word of a show then take all words up till season as show name and find that show. if not found mark it as unknown.
Do not search after season for show name ever....
a little table of prefexes to ignore would be more reliable i am thinking
have it do a quick check if there is nfo file with it and if it has a tvid in it for the show. if it does not match flag for manual naming.

only rename shows it is 99 percent sure of. leave rest for manual lookup
have the shows on a list that do not rename so you can cilck them or type in differnt name and search thetvdb for name.

It would be nice if thetvdb would just remove invalid chars from the show names on their database.

old and new. on the when to watch those are usualy newer shows. highlight their names in differnt color.
maintain a seperate data file of canceled and dead shows. use those names to run 2 seperate searches. one for current shows and one for missing old shows. also if it is a seporate file and the main file crashes you dont need to reload it again.

put the shows info in one file

put any changes you make to the shows info in a second file key on some db id like showname to showwwnammme

a third file could be used for toggles on the shows and the show path to drive or location it is stored.

this way if you make mass change to drive locations you just need to delete the 3rd file and rescan folders and files and not redownload all the data again. saving load on the database servers.

tvdb does have a download-able database that could be used locally somehow.

you used to have the report for the scan tabbed or filtered before you changes the way it is now. now the list is almost way to long with 50000 episodes that list gets really long if you have lots of missing shows.

have options in the renamer to filter the files as it put them away. I use 6 drives
drive a = 0 thru D
drive b = E thru L
drive c = M thru M
drive d = N thru S
drive e = T thru T
drive f = U thru Z

If you you could set the renamer to put shows in those letter ranges on those drives or folders then we would not have to premake folders it could just make a folder for any new show it finds on that drive. one of the first renamers sort of did this and i like that about it.

when renaming shows only look in the incoming folders. have a separate scan for the storage folders that way if something goes worn with thetvdb it does not trash all you work so easily as I tend to click ok on the daily scans without looking at them so close

clicking on the daily scans lead me to unchecking the rename on all the old shows to keep it from renaming them but now I have a great pain when i go to look for missing episodes i need to again edit each and every old show and swich the rename back on them.
the problem is there is no visible way to see which ones have it turned off or any of the other toggles available.
this is why a old show toggle would be handy to just toggle all the old shows rename flag on and off.

care needs to be taken to make sure it does not look in the descriptions for show names. many times i have found shows that had show names in the descriptions renamed to that for the show.

the rss and file search seem to work pretty well now although i change a lot of the search setting so they work better. i also prefer to use https when possible.

my shows: I like how this works now but if there was easy way to filter current and old shows and a way to toggle on a view of the flags set on the show. one other problem i noted here is if you do a tvdb lookup it will open the browser in tvreame instead of the browser and you do not a button to return back to tvrename. i have to right click and pick back currently.
another button to collapse all the shows that have had + clicked would be nice also.

there is a little renamer called Mediarenamer that only looks at one folder and puts all the stuff in another. this program i like partly because it stops and ask me to pick which way i want to rename a show if there are several choices. Some times thetvdb has so many choices i do not know how you are getting the right one. i have seen several shows that have more than one with english. The shows seem to be listed as show name year language

I often wonder why not rename the shows all the same Show year language. I know not everyone gets multiple language shows but as the world uses the net more i suspect the demand will rise. I look for shows in lots of languages and translate those i can.
I find foreign shows are like watching scifi some times their life styles and social interactions are so different.

instead of renameing and putting away it wold be nice to have a way for it to just scan folders and look for the names and create show listing for them and have a way to enter some xml for each show that could be used on xbmc or other players. this would be nice for a collection of home movies or what ever you wanted to catalog. If the renamer cold be set to not rename certain folders this would be great. then also have flags for tv video movie documentary etc so you could pick which you wanted to work with. I think a separate app to manually create xml for shows would function for this.

if someone made a app that could scan a group of folders to see if they had the right files in them like
showfoldername
folder.jpg
show.html
show.tmn
showfoldername.xml
showfoldername.jpg
showfoldername-fanart.jpg
etc.
a small app that could check if or or all of these exist and way to create the xlm and html would be nice.

missing and lost.. when scanning folders create a list of files that are there that do not seem to be part of the show. for looking at if they are needed. say some files were manually copied and not renamed properly it could list them.

have a way to show the show season names a few ways like usa season uk season dvd season. if possible. I run into shows off by one often.

you program is so close to a media player you could just add a play function and the option to run it by remote control. with a media window.

lots of times videos are made by different people I have often wondered about if the ntfs checksum for the files could be used as a way to identify duplicates and misnamed shows.

spellcheckers
why do none of these spell checkers auto capatalize the first word and single i's in a sentence? and if it starts with what why who check for ? at the end. It is somethign so simple yet no one does it.

well not quite 101 but i am sure there are lots more thoughts.
