Global Settings (Timezone and others)

First off, I love TV Rename. Thanks for all your hard work!

Sadly, there are a couple of things that really irritate me.

There are a number of settings that you can only access by Editing each show individually.
Why?

It would be lovely to have a Global Timezone Setting in the Preferences section.
I have a long list of shows and having to click each show then click edit then find select the timezone on 70+ show is really annoying.

I tried to simply edit the XML file but every time I do it breaks the file. Why? I have no idea... it seems like I should be able to replace the default Eastern Standard Time with a quick Find and Replace All to Central Standard Time but for some reason TVRename freaks out and wants me to reload a cached backup copy.

Another option on the individual show settings is "Do Missing Check" there's a check box for this. I loaded up a fresh copy of the latest version and started with new XML files and "UNchecked" the "Do Missing Check" box in the Preferences yet I still had to click on every single show to uncheck that box.
Actually, I was able to do a Find and Replace All edit on the TVRenameSettings.xml file and change the setting from True to False without any problems so that helped speed that process up... but I shouldn't have to edit the file at all honestly...

Why are show settings spread out between two files? It seems like the TheTVDB.xml file should only hold show info and the Settings file should hold all the settings... this isn't the case though...

Essentially, you're doing a tremendous job but so many of the features and preferences are counter intuitive and difficult to find, access, and set globally. The new 2.2 layout seems more convoluted and disorganized than the 2.1 layout.

What's the point of setting Search Folders in the Preferences if I then need to dig around to find the Folder Monitor (which used to be visible) and set the folders again?

It just seems like either options in the Preferences don't really work or I have to set them twice or in several places.

Lastly, I hate the fact that a fresh scan requires me to click a million times the box that pops up and wants to add season folders... Please add an ignore all feature to that pop up or better yet add a Preference that lets me choose to not have that pop up in the first place. I don't want to create folders and I don't want to have to click over and over ignore...

The overall functionality of the program is awesome... Organize the settings and don't force settings on the user. Make general settings that are currently under each shows edit button Global. IMO if there is a setting for a show I should be able to find them all on the preferences tab and not have have to click each show then click edit to change things unless I want to change just that one show.

Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot one last thing... On the Scan tab there's a button for Check/Uncheck All and a button for Rename (which ironically checks or unchecks all and doesn't rename) and then way over on the left which I didn't see at first is a Do Checked button... why do I have to jump through hoops to figure that out? If there's a button that says Check All and one next to it that says Rename... then the Rename button should do what it says... not uncheck all the boxes then make me hit it again just to recheck them all and then hit another button to actually Do what the Rename button should have done in the first place. :P

OMG, take a chill pill.
It would be lovely to have a Global Timezone Setting in the Preferences section.
I have a long list of shows and having to click each show then click edit then find select the timezone on 70+ show is really annoying.

The time zone for a show is the time zone that the show is broadcast from, not your time zone. This helps you determine when the show has aired. You should not have to set all of your shows to the same time zone. Your time zone is determined by the setting on your computers clock.
Another option on the individual show settings is "Do Missing Check" there's a check box for this. I loaded up a fresh copy of the latest version and started with new XML files and "UNchecked" the "Do Missing Check" box in the Preferences yet I still had to click on every single show to uncheck that box.
The "Do Missing Check" is vital to the operation of the application. The way that the application works is to determine what episodes you don't currently have and then looks in your "Search Folders" to see if it can match anything there to something in that missing list. If you do not do a missing check on anything then nothing will ever get picked up from the search folders. Which brings us on to ...
What's the point of setting Search Folders in the Preferences if I then need to dig around to find the Folder Monitor (which used to be visible) and set the folders again?
The search folders and the folder monitor do not do the same thing. The folder monitor main function is to help you set up your collection when you start. After that you never need the folder monitor again, although you can use it if you want to add a new series or a new drive location. The listings in these two locations should not be the same. The folders listed in Folder monitor are where your series will end up. The folders listed in Search Folders are where you have your new, unsorted, unrenamed episodes.
I hate the fact that a fresh scan requires me to click a million times the box that pops up and wants to add season folders... Please add an ignore all feature
If you had read any forum posts you would see that other people had asked for this and it is already on Steve's to-do-list. I do wonder why you see this a million times though? Do you have your files in a "Flat File Structure" where you have multiple seasons in the same folder? If so you can set this, but if you had set up your shows using the Folder Monitor it would have worked this out and set it on a show by show basis.
Is this caused by shows where you don't have anything from a season? Different actions will happen depending on which button you press, such as an entry appearing in the "ignore season" listing of that show.
On the Scan tab there's a button for Check/Uncheck All and a button for Rename (which ironically checks or unchecks all and doesn't rename)
The buttons on the right are for checking or unchecking actions. You can check or uncheck all actions, check or uncheck the renaming actions without changing the moving action for instance. Or you can manually uncheck or check individual actions in the main window. Once you have determined what you want to do you click the Do Checked button. It will Do any Checked items.

@ ScoopD

OMG, take a chill pill.

Irritation and freaking out are two very different things.

Regardless, I apologize if I came across as overly critical, whiny or bitchy as that was not my intent.
I started out the post with thanks and appreciation which is genuine.
I was under the impression that this forum is here for user feedback and requests.

You should not have to set all of your shows to the same time zone. Your time zone is determined by the setting on your computers clock.

My computer clock timezone is set for Central Standard Time. The default show timezone is consistently Eastern Standard Time.
If I didn't need to worry about setting the timezone then why is there an option to change it?
I was under the impression that the timezone option sets the upcoming airing times so it seems that it needs to correlate with the timezone in which I would view the given episode. Regardless, editing the xml file should not break it and the program should have the option to set the timezone globally.

The search folders and the folder monitor do not do the same thing.

Thanks for that info. I did not understand that.

If you had read any forum posts

Sadly I jumped the gun with that part. I read the other posts and found the feature listed on the Vote page after I wrote my original post. I apologize for the duplicated request.

Once you have determined what you want to do you click the Do Checked button. It will Do any Checked items.

I understand the logic. I don't care for that methodology... Thankfully it's not really a huge issue.
Nevertheless I felt it worth mentioning that it can be confusing upon the first encounter. Obviously it didn't take me long to figure out what to do.

Thanks for your response and clarifications.

Please note the gratitude I've expressed throughout both posts before you make assumptions as to my state of mind.

:D
No worries mate - just seemed like a bit of a rant.
Not saying you are, but starting an attack with "Don't take this personally" doesn't work. In any case I try to be helpful to my fellow users if I can. If I come off as abrupt it is probably because of my Job in IT support where I deal with people who can't see the large button in the middle of the screen flashing CLICK HERE and instead call me to ask where to click.

Anyway ... OK the time thing again. The way it works is that someone (anyone who signs up) on TheTVDB will set up the aired time of a show. There is no Time Zone setting on their web site, so this time is really variable as it will be different depending on where that person is viewing the show. We cannot determine if that person is in New York, LA, London, or Melbourne Australia (like me). So the time that they see it airing is kind of irrelivant, which is why I wondered about your wanting to change the timezone. In most cases a show in the US will air earliest on the East Coast so that is set as the default. All these times are only relevant for the "When To Watch" section. Due to the variance in the time, I would not use this as a "TV Guide" as you are relying on all the settings to be configured correctly on theTVDB database as well as people putting in the correct date and time and of course this is not syncronised with a network EPG for change of time or last minute swaping of episodes etc.

TheTVDB is community populated. Be active and get on there - they should have a timezone property in their data. If they did then your problem would probably go away. Unless I am still not understanding what the concern is with this.

By the way - yes you would think that modifying this data directly in the XML file would not break things, but unless you were writing the code of this app you would not know that for sure. You know what they say about assumption.

Don't take this personally... erm... hang on... that's not how I wanted to start off at all :P

Just teasing a bit... I know how you feel. I owned an IT business for 7 years and know very well those users who think the internet is a magical land where they do there job.
I've often wondered how some people are even capable of waking up and dressing themselves.
That being the case... I wouldn't have even posted if I'd not searched for more info and tried several different tactics to solve the issues (whether they were me being picky or not).
I did reach a point though where I wasn't finding what I what I wanted to know quickly enough so I unloaded it in my post...

Thanks for the info on the timezone setting... I understand why it defaults to Eastern Standard now :D.

I don't really want to use TV Rename as a guide but dangit... there's a setting there so it must be set!! ;)

All that stuff aside... you're alright Scoop! I may have been ranting slightly but my appreciation at the hard work on TV Rename again is quite genuine... The program, aside from its quirks has saved me so much time and effort. Hundreds and hundreds of shows in my collection that would have otherwise been left unnamed are now all nice and pretty! Yay!!!

So case closed then. Cheers!
