Here's my current list of ideas and things to do for future versions of TVRename. Some are as a result of suggestions on these forums. See.. I listen to you guys! The position on the list doesn't indicate any sort of priority, just where my cursor was when I started to type. A few other suggestions are tracked by unread forum notification emails sitting in my inbox. :)

Edit: This is the 10 October 2008 list:

- warn user if no DVD order information for a season
- notification area icon only
- custom name formats for renaming
- editable list of matching regexps
- built in rss server
- enter a show range for ignore rule
- only show manually added folders in folder list, and add auto ones in behind the scenes
- tick things off on the when-to-watch list
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=38&p=241#p241
- rename .txt to .sub
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=62&p=236#p236
- folder browsers with type-in area
- use meta-info from video files as elements in rename-to filename
- viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61
- combine rename and finding & organising windows into one?
- folder monitor: show tick beside folders with both tvdb code and season number (i.e. all details filled in)
- value checking on show rule entering
- search option on epinfo right click
- "collapse" rule? A,B,C,D -> e01-A,e02-B+C,e03-D
- remove trailing punctuation on mininova, etc., searches
- logging / rollback
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=23
- older settings restore dialog
- torrent download, tweak for utorrent, pass to utorrent
- episode guide scroll to chosen episode (when relevant)
- "what i have" list export, for use in "find and organise"
- torrent site rss feed reading (http://tvrss.net/feed/unique/)
- air day/time override
- dump scraped show+ep info to xml
- search suffix, like 'eztv'
- Torrent matcher : recursive file finding, rebuilding a torrent's directory structure
- auto checking
- mythtv integration

Firstly, thanks for an excellent and very useful program. I've used a few programs that do the same thing but have found yours to be the best.

For your info, others that I have used are Media Renamer by ccMatrix (on Mediaportal forums).

TV Renamer by Natbur - http://renamer.natbur.com/index.php?opt ... e&Itemid=1 - Very good program for renaming TV. Doesn't have all the features of yours though.

Epnamer - http://www.epnamer.com - WOrk seems to have stopped on this.

You might want to have a look if you haven't seen them before, might be something you can use :o)

Theres another program worth looking at too called XBMC Media Companion. As the name suggests it was built to be used in conjunction with the HTPC software XBMC but has alot of features in common with most Media Renamers. One that I think is worth adding is the Fanart from tvdb but have a look and see what you think.

Sorry this got longer and longer as I thought about it...
Would it be possible to merge the first four tabs (My Shows, Renaming, Missing, and Finding and Organizing) into one tab?

I'll outline my idea: start with the current My shows tab. you could make the tree's top level have two options: My Shows and Folders (or make Folders a separate tab). Simply insert the filename or missing info into the entry for the individual episodes on the My Shows list as it currently exists.
The Folders option would list the folders that are being watched/searched/moved into. Upon selecting a folder, the right pane would list the files in those folders in a similar fashion, listing the best guess for the show/season/ep to which it belongs. Similar to the 'search' and 'watch' links currently in use, it would have 'move to show folder','rename to 'Show Name - s00e00 - Title.avi', and 'assign to a show' links in the display.

Perhaps the two (My Shows and Folders) could be combined, even. For instance, depending upon how the show is set up, you have an entry in the tree for the folder associated with each show or season, and clicking on the tree entry would bring up the files therein, with the various options and information listed next to each filename. This approach raises the question of where to put the global folders. Perhaps the List would start with a 'Montioring' tree entry, which would list all the folders (duh) currently being monitored.

There are my practical ideas (if they're impractical, then just shut up). Here's my pointless rambling thoughts about the approach that needs to be taken:
I've seen a fair bit about changing the layout/interface of the program, and I tend to agree that it needs reorganizing. Its functionality and usefulness are beyond compare, of course, but there's a small hurdle of learning how to use the program that could be lessened by a better layout. My opinion is that there needs to be an integrative approach taken here: try to fit everything in one window/tab that you can, and organize it intuitively so the user can find what he's looking for, even if that means making certain functions available from several different approaches.

If you read all of that, then I applaud you for not hunting me down and strangling me. Steve, I owe you a couple of beers.

Oh! and you could totally (depending on your masochism) add in a function to scrape http or feeds from the major bt search engines, parse 'em, and download a torrent in-program.

EDIT: ok, that's already in there. please ignore this post.

I agree can be confusing at first. You've got me thinking now.. It'd be like windows explorer, but with shows instead of folders, and some (most) of the shows having corresponding folder(s) on disk. Clicking on the shows and seasons could then show what's in them - the episodes. Episodes on disk, missing, missing-but-found, or yet-to-air would have different icons/colours/something. This could even work in parallel with the existing tabs, so you'd still have the global renaming/missing checks as they are now, or folder-by-folder through the explorer-type interface. I'll think this over for a while, but I probably won't do any major redesigning until the one I've just done has faded from my memory. :P

Regarding torrents.. I'm planning to scrape RSS feeds, match show+season+epside, downoad the torrent, adjust the torrent's save-to location (which I can do for at least uTorrent), and then pass it onto your default torrent client (uTorrent, Azureus, etc.). You'd specify words that had to be (eztv, VTV, etc.), or must not be (720p) in the download link. The download could then be started automatically, or with a confirmation dialog. "Hey.. Blah blah S02E03 is ready for download! Ok/Cancel"

The likelihood of me actually downloading the torrents in-program is about 0.00001% at the moment, since I don't like to re-do what others already do well, and I'm quite happy with using an external program. Especially if I can tweak its download-to location. :)
