Hey there guys,

Just a quick (maybe obvious) question, does this program actually physically rename files ? I have a few tv series that have different naming conventions ie Scrubs tv series is in season folders but the episodes are named 101 - My First Day.avi, 102 - My Mentor.avi etc. I am trying to import these tv series in to MP Tvseries in Media Portal which is having a bit of a hard time importing them. So I want to physically rename these files but TVrename does'nt seem to rename them. I am sure that the program is able to rename them but I cant seem to figure it out.

Any advice would be great !

Cheers

Indeed - renaming files and reorganising your media are the primary functions of this application. I use Media Portal as well, so I know exactly what you are talking about.

So - in order to get the application to rename your files you need to do several things. I'll explain from your example. In the My Shows tab you need to Add a show (bottom left hand corner) enter your show name Scrubs and click the search button - this searches the database at TheTVDB and returns the shows that match your input. With Scrubs you will only get one back.

Now you need to put in the folder where you keep your episodes. In that same Add/Edit Show dialog there are all the options about that show - about half way down is an entry for "Base Folder" this will be your folder (probably called Scrubs, so "x:\MyTVshows\scrubs" or whatever - use the browse) under which you have season folders. You will see the options there for "Folder per Season" and "Pad to two digits" - tick as appropriate and click OK.

The problem that will have been happening with MP TVSeries is that the show name is not in the file name. You can screw around with the Regex in that to get it working for your system, but in TVRename, if you do a renaming scan it will pick up that all the files under the pre-defined series folder are not names correctly. You can set up your new naming convention - Options Menu - Filename Template Editor. When you do the scan it will find all the episodes that it wants to rename & display what it wants to rename them to.

Hopefully this puts you on the right track. If you need to add a bunch of shows there is a more scan-and-identify-folders method. If you need more help tell us some more speciftc details about what version of the app you are using and what you have set up - then what you are seeing when you are doing actions.

Hey man, Thanks for info !!

Just having a bit of a problem and was wondering if you could shed some light. I have added tv series that need to be named ie. scrubs but when I click on the CHECK button in the renaming tab it does not detect anything to rename. My files are named like this.. Scrubs\Season1\101 - My first day and I have the naming convention under options -> filename template editor set to {ShowName} - S{Season:2}E{Episode}[-E{Episode2}] - {EpisodeName}. So I assume when you click on the CHECK button it should detect the Scrubs episodes not named with this convention and then when I press rename it should rename them accordingly. However as I said when I press CHECK it does not detect anything to rename.

Any ideas ?? this seems like a great bit of kit, just need to figure out how to get it to work for me.

Cheers

Oh yes - saved me more time than I care to calculate.
OK, so you have a renaming tab, so you are not using the newer 2.2 alpha versions. Important to know so that I can give you directions.
To be sure your show is set up properly, go to the My Shows Tab and right click on the showname. This will give you the pop up menu. At the bottom of the menu should be the Folder. Also right click on a season and be sure that it has worked out the season folders.

Go to the Options Menu and choose the Filename Processor. Point it to one of your season folders (Test Folder). Have a look at how it is working them out. I tried your setup and it is seeing the show as season 1 episode 101, which is not matching any know episodes, so nothing will happen. Untick the Test All box and you can step through all the options at the top. Sure enough the first one in the list will correctly identify the show. The one that is screwing it up is the last one in the list. You can delete this one (you can add it back afterwards by pressing the defaults button) close the window then run your renaming check again. That should give you a screen worth of things to rename.

Just a quick Gotcha - check that your episode name matches the new episode name, as sometimes the order that episodes appeared in gets messed up. That is at the database end where any old user types in the details. You can go to their website TheTVDB and check out the order first if you want.
