Automatically add new shows

This may be a stupid question but I can't for the life of me work out if it is possible. Is it possible to tvrename discover new shows if they are not added to My Shows. For example say I have The Simpsons under My Shows - when the shows has downloaded it is automatically shifted to Unsorted Media, then tvrename is run and renames and moves The Simpsons to the correct folder. However if I download The Family Guy, but it is not listed under My Shows then it is not discovered and just sits there. I am able to set this up with therenamer but would like to use tvrename as it does a better job of recognising shows.

Also can you set the root output folder that therename moves to, I have two drives with shows on them and want tvrename to move all new shows to one of the drives but it seems to be selecting the other one for no apparent reason.

Appreciate any help with this great tool.

You have to add a show to My Shows to get TV Rename to manage it. TV Renamer is directed more at managing complete show collections than it is to just renaming files. Most people don't want to add every show, or even most of the shows they cap or download to their permanent collection. So it's more sensible to define the shows you want to collect than it would be to define the ones you don't. Programs like TheRenamer are more suited to handling one off episodes or small, incomplete collections.

But once you add a show to My Shows, On the Scan tab, click Options and then the search folders tab and and add the path to your Unsorted Media folder. Then, when you do a scan, it'll find any episodes of the shows you want managed and let you rename them and move them to wherever you want them to be archived.

You would normally define that folder when you add the show to My Shows using the Folder Monitor tool. Most people have a folder or drive set aside for their show collection. When adding a new show to that collection, you create a folder on the drive named for the show, then run a check in the folder monitor to add it to My Shows, then run a scan which will then create Season folders (if you select Folder Per Season) and then move and rename the files from the Search Folder(s) to the collection folder.

If you want to change the Root Folder that TV Rename puts a show after it's been added to My Shows (IE, if it's not putting them where you want), select the show on the My Shows tab, click edit, and then change the Base folder path to wherever you want the shows to be moved when you do a scan.

What DedTV says is correct: the focus is on maintaining a media library, looking to see what it missing, then finding those specific files in the download location.

If you have a "media library" folder, then TVRename can set up new shows in "My Shows" as folders are added to it. Have a look at Tools > Folder Monitor, it will let you specify where your media library is, and then look for folders in it that aren't already in My Shows, then help identify them.

So, when you start watching a new show, just make an empty folder for it in your media library, then visit the Folder Monitor.

I've spent some time over the past week improving the folder monitor, making it less confusing. Keep an eye open for the 2.2.0b4 beta I'll be uploading later today, and try out the new Folder Monitor.
